How the 2026 Federal Income Tax Calculator Works

Tax year 2026 (returns filed in 2027). Figures are based on the IRS inflation adjustments for tax year 2026 announced in October 2025. This is an estimate only: it does not include tax credits (such as the Child Tax Credit), the Alternative Minimum Tax, the Net Investment Income Tax, special capital gains rates, newer targeted deductions, or state and local income taxes.

The United States uses a progressive income tax. Your income is not taxed at a single rate; instead, each slice of taxable income is taxed at the rate for the bracket it falls into. This calculator subtracts your pre-tax deductions and your standard (or itemized) deduction from your gross income, then applies the 2026 brackets for your filing status one slice at a time.

The Formula

Taxable income = Gross income โˆ’ Pre-tax adjustments โˆ’ Deduction
Tax = ฮฃ (income in each bracket ร— bracket rate)

  • Effective tax rate = total federal income tax รท gross income
  • Marginal tax rate = the rate of the highest bracket your taxable income reaches

Worked Example

A single filer earns $75,000 in wages in 2026 and takes the standard deduction of $16,100.

  • Taxable income: $75,000 โˆ’ $16,100 = $58,900
  • 10% on the first $12,400 = $1,240
  • 12% on $12,400 to $50,400 ($38,000) = $4,560
  • 22% on $50,400 to $58,900 ($8,500) = $1,870
  • Total federal income tax = $7,670

The marginal rate is 22%, but the effective rate is only $7,670 รท $75,000 = 10.23%, because most of the income is taxed at the lower 10% and 12% rates or not taxed at all thanks to the standard deduction.

Ways to Lower Your Taxable Income

  • Contribute to a traditional 401(k), 403(b), or 457 plan through payroll
  • Contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA) if you have a qualifying high-deductible health plan
  • Itemize if your mortgage interest, state and local taxes, and charitable gifts exceed the standard deduction
  • Check eligibility for credits such as the Child Tax Credit or education credits, which reduce tax dollar for dollar (not included in this estimate)

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the 2026 federal income tax brackets?

For 2026 the rates are 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. For single filers the 37% rate starts above $640,600 of taxable income; for married couples filing jointly it starts above $768,700.

What is the standard deduction for 2026?

For tax year 2026 the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, and $24,150 for heads of household. Additional amounts apply to taxpayers who are 65 or older or blind, which this calculator does not include.

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

Your marginal rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of taxable income. Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your total income. Because of progressive brackets and the standard deduction, the effective rate is always lower than the marginal rate for most people.

Does moving into a higher bracket reduce my take-home pay?

No. Only the income above the bracket threshold is taxed at the higher rate. Earning more always leaves you with more after-tax income from federal income tax brackets alone.

Is this calculator accurate for filing my return?

It is an estimate for planning. It ignores tax credits, AMT, the Net Investment Income Tax, capital gains rates, self-employment tax, and state taxes. Use IRS forms or tax software, or consult a tax professional, when you file.
